ENGINEERING CAPACITY PLANNER
See the capacity gap
before you commit
Put productive hours, competing commitments and review effort beside the proposed work. Adjust the horizon or staffing to understand the trade-offs before a program decision.
Use one discipline or interchangeable skill pool at a time. Inputs stay in this page; no values are sent to True North. Downloading saves a scenario on your device.
EDITABLE EXCEL WORKBOOK
Find the week
and the skill that constrain delivery
Move from an average over the whole program to an eight-week view of distinct skill pools. The workbook includes working formulas for available hours, planned demand, headroom and load, plus a separate approved-plan-versus-actual log.
- Plan by skill and reviewerReplace the illustrative design, stress-review and configuration pools. Enter people, scheduled hours, non-project time, existing commitments and new delivery and review work for each week.
- See shortages without netting them awayThe workbook's separate illustrative example has a six-hour stress-review gap in week three while the other pools still have headroom. Its summary keeps that shortage visible. Missing inputs remain unknown rather than becoming zero capacity or zero demand.
- Preserve the approved baselineCopy agreed dates, skill labels and planned hours as values into the actuals tab. Record actual effort, the reason for variance and a review owner. Later edits to the planning scenario do not overwrite that baseline.
No email required. The example is illustrative, not a client program or a delivery commitment. Check dependency timing and named reviewer availability before agreeing a plan. The workbook adds no contingency or certification authority.
THE CALCULATION
Every adjustment has
a visible assumption
People × scheduled hours per week × productive availability × planning weeks.
Productive team hours minus existing delivery and review commitments over the same horizon. Negative remaining capacity is shown as an existing overload.
New delivery hours × (1 + delivery allowance %) + new review hours.
Total existing and proposed work compared with productive team hours. The staffing equivalent divides the gap by one person’s productive hours over the horizon.
BEFORE THE COMMITMENT
Check the constraints
that totals can hide
- Separate critical skillsRun a separate scenario for specialist groups and named reviewers. Spare drafting hours cannot automatically cover checking or specialist work.
- Place effort in the scheduleThis calculator assumes an average weekly capacity. Test peaks, dependencies and review windows in the actual program schedule.
- Revisit the work estimateKeep the delivery allowance explicit. Scope changes, rework and incoming review comments can change the estimate.
Engineering sign-off and certification decisions remain with the responsible authorised specialists and authorities. Explore engineering resource planning or use the manufacturing-transfer checklist for a related handoff.
Turn the scenario into a resource decision
Bring the work-package estimate, key milestones and available skills. We can help clarify the planning assumptions and options to take to program leadership.
